CCTV Security And Crime Prevention
In order to beat the fight against crime, businesses in urban areas came to the realisation that the use of modern technology could play a big role in securing their premises. As a result, the CCTV security system became the preferred method of security and constant monitoring.
This system transmits real time images which are controlled and monitored at a central point. This enables the person monitoring the cameras to be alerted to any occurrences or emergencies that need immediate attention hence quick response times can be achieved.
This system has caused much interest with not only the business sector, but the general public too. Unfortunately because of its high tech capabilities and high demand, maintenance and installation, it is an expensive system to have, thus limited to only the wealthy who can afford the twenty four hour surveillance system.
It is also used in institutions such as jails and hospitals, where twenty four hour monitoring is necessary, because it is ideal for picking up any movement or activity that might need immediate and urgent official response; although private spaces such as sleeping rooms and bathrooms are not subjected to such monitoring. This is a way of respecting peoples privacy.
Banks, casinos and airports have this system as a standard feature. It helps with preventing robberies, muggings as well as things such as the stealing of bags and other valuables. These institutions also use the system to monitor staff to ensure that rules and protocol are followed, and also to see if any of them might be stealing anything.
Stores and supermarkets also use the camera system to prevent shoplifting or misconduct by customers as well as prevention of theft from their staff, stealing stock. This inturn has decreased crime in the stores and has limited their products being sold on the black market.
There is however objections and debates as to a persons violation and infringement of their rights to privacy regarding the constant monitoring by the CCTV surveillance cameras. Mainly hospitals and mental health facilities are constantly under fire by their patients and the patients family members as to the necessity there of and the violation of their rights to privacy.
Due to the strong presence of CCTV in shopping malls some customers feel they are being treated like criminals and staff express a feeling of mistrust by their employers. This feeling is mutual from the public and staff of institutions such as banks and casinos.
