CCTV is the acronym for closed circuit television. CCTV systems are surveillance systems most commonly used to enhance security. The first CCTV system was implemented in the 1940s by a renown German engineer, Walter Bruch. The "eye in the sky" is the term typically given to CCTV systems that are installed strategically in the ceiling of various businesses -- casinos, banks, and retail stores. The cameras are covered by a semi-transparent plastic globe which makes it extremely difficult to see which direction the camera is facing from a distance. Retailers often go a step farther to take advantage of this strategy by installing empty globes, giving the appearance of additional cameras.

The CCTV systems have become a welcome partner to law enforcement. Along with its main purpose of combating crime, CCTV systems have become an invaluable tool in keeping public order. Speed cameras have been installed to monitor traffic violations, congestion, littering, loitering, and other civil violations.

CCTV systems are important to government security, particularly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. CCTV systems are used globally to enhance security and prevent future terrorist attacks. It was in 1993, that surveillance cameras were installed in the World Trade Center as a preventive measure against terrorist attacks. This is a good example of the widespread usage of CCTV systems throughout the world and its role for enhanced security.

The personal use of CCTV technology has become more widespread as the technology has become more affordable and easier to use. Many homeowners utilize CCTV systems in their own homes for added security and protection for their families. Special cameras referred to as "Nannycams" are sometimes used in homes to monitor child care provided by babysitters or nannies.

With the significant number of benefits of the CCTV systems, it is not surprising that the use of this technology has increased tremendously in recent years. In all areas of daily living, CCTV systems will continue to play a major role in protecting public safety.
