What To Do To Have A Safe Home

Your home should be your sanctuary. It should be a safe, loving place for you and your family to live and grow. The sanctity of your home is sacred. Don't let the chaos of the outside world enter. After all, the world is filled with so much rancor, disorder and distress that you shouldn't have to face it in your one refugee, home.

Reduce the risk of crime by making taking these precautions. Think about how a burglar would act; evaluate your home in terms of weaknesses and strengths. Home security is of the utmost importance for your family, so take time to assess your home's vulnerabilities.

Starting off lets take a look at the windows. Are the windows old and easy to get into? Would they be easy to break or pry open? If they are, then it might make a good idea to replace the Windows or get new locking mechanisms. Again, don't leave it to chance.

You should be aware that you don't want the locks to be easily seen from the outside. If a thief can see the locks they can figure out the best way to get them open to get into your home. Try to find away to conceal them. And if your windows have keyed locks, don't leave the keys lying around. You should also consider skylights in the same way that Windows are. Make sure the skylights are locked.

Doors are up next. Nearly two thirds of all burglars gain entry via an unsecure door. To prevent this from happening, locks are vital. Deadbolts with at least a minimum throw of an inch should be installed on all doors; the strike plates should have screws that are at least 3 inches long. All doors should be solid hardwood or metal clad; reinforce wood doors with a steel strip and plates around the lock and hinges.

When it comes to hinges, they should be located on the inside with nonremovable pins. You can also install a rim lock to the inside of the door. This will add to the security. What a rim lock does is automatically lock the door once it is closed. For all all leading doors, consider a bolts for the top and bottom of the door. Make sure you have a door viewer on all outward doors. This way you can see out before you open the door.

One of the things that you really shouldn't do to make things easy for a thief is leave spare keys out. It's better to leave spare keys with a friend although less convenient. If you do have to leave spare keys make it really hard. Good thieves know all of the common hiding place. Change the location of the keys monthly and don't hide keys near the window, doors, or under a doormat.

Lighting for safety. Always keep entrances well lit. Select a low energy light bulb that is controlled by an automatic dust to dawn switch for constant lighting. Make sure these lights are out of easy reach. Also consider motion activated lights.

A home security system may be in your best interest. Getting a home alarm is economical and they are easy to use. Why not invest in your own peace of mind? Taking these precautions and being prepared are sure steps to lead a safe and happy home life.

Having a security system isn’t cheap, but for the peace of your mind and protection it gives you from burglary, the price is certainly worth it.
