Improving Home Security with Lighting
Most people are aware of how good lighting can deter intruders to the home. Whatever lighting there is can deter a criminal. If used in the right way, however, they can be a huge deterrent to potential criminals.
Exterior:
Since break-ins are most common either in the rear of your house or near one of the doorway, it is very important that these areas be well lit from the outside. You want this lighting to be as difficult to tamper with as possible; you want it set out of reach and made to be tamper proof, in order to maximize the safety effectiveness of the lighting.
You absolutely want to ensure that your garage or carport is well lit. An automatic garage opener is the best choice. All the best garage door opener fitted today use a light that operates when the opener is activated, lighting the garage interior. In carports, it is best to leave a light on permanently, have a light on a timer, or use a motion sensor to activate the light.
If you do not want your outside lights on continuously, then it is advisable to have lights set off by a motion detector. The principal benefit of this for home security, especially in the backyard, is that the light warns you that someone is in your yard. When there can be some trouble that dogs, cats, or even birds will trigger off the sensor and cause the lights to come on, if you set the sensitivity of the sensor right this won't be a issue.
When thinking about the lighting in your front yard, essentially anything will do. You just have to make sure that it lights up the entire front and sides of your home. You can use motion sensors on these lights, just like the ones in the rear of your home, but they are more prone to being incidentally triggered by people coming to visit, or kids playing.
Inside The House:
When going out at night, most people leave a light on within their home. Police refer to these lights as burglar beacons. This is the single light that all of us leave on so that we are not returning to a home that is completely dark.
These single lights, however, can sometimes indicate to burglars that you are actually out. When going away, it is advisable to leave various lights on in different parts of the house and even leave the radio on. It is a good idea to put them on timers. From the outside it always looks as though someone is at home.
