It is important to make certain that you are protected outside your home. An alarm system works great to protect your home and is a very smart choice. There is more to keeping your home safe than just an alarm system, however.
By having outdoor safety measures you will be able to make it harder for burglars. Most criminals want to go to homes that show very little risk. Setting up your home on the outside will help make your home look less welcome to burglars.
One tip for outdoor safety is to make sure you have your lights turned on once it gets dark. A well lit yard makes it hard for a criminal to come to your door or window with out being spotted. You can set up your lights so that they are motion detected.
Be sure that all of your entrances are visible, especially from a neighbors yard. Keep your lawn and shrubs well trimmed. You don't want to have a place for burglars to hide behind.
A yard that is not taken care of is easy to spot. When you are away from your home, make your lawn care a priority. Make arrangements before you leave so your home won't be an easy target.
If you would like even more security you can set up outside security camera. Security cameras can be camouflaged or easily spotted. Security cameras are good for deterring burglars and are handy in case a break in does happen.
Security gates can serve as another warning to burglars that your home is well protected. They are a useful outdoor safety feature. Security gates allow you to be in charge of who specifically has access to your property.
Home security systems inside your home work superbly for the protection of your house and family. Outdoor home security is simply an extra step you should take to continue to make it even safer. Good security is vital for keeping your home secure.

In this article I'm going to talk about the newest, most effective chemical compound of the 3 basic ones used in self-defense sprays.
OC, which stands for Oleoresin Capsicum, is not an irritant as are the other two. It is a natural chemical, whereas the other two are both man-made chemicals.
The term "pepper spray" comes from the fact that Oleoresin Capsicum is made from hot pepper plant oils. "Oleoresin" is a term meaning a mix of a partly solid substance obtained from the sap of specific plants and trees. "Capsicum" is Latin for hot pepper plant fruit. OC is not harmful to the skin or damaging to any internal tissues, while the other 2 man-made chemical compounds may possibly be toxic and harmful to human tissue.
As an inflammatory agent, the OC pepper spray has an immediate effect upon contact with the assailant being sprayed. Temporary blindness is caused when the capillaries of the eyes dilate and the terrible burning sensation from the pepper spray will cause uncontrollable clamping shut of the eyes. Immediate inflammation of the lungs and throat will cause the assailant to fall to his knees in a gasping attempt to inhale more air than his inflamed breathing tissues will allow. He will only be able to get enough oxygen to keep from passing out and may also experience nausea and vomiting.
After about 20 to 45 minutes, the effects of the OC pepper spray will wear off, leaving no permanent damage. He will make a complete recovery, hopefully in jail. The victim has had time to escape while the assailant is struggling with just trying to breathe.
OC pepper spray IS effective against both people who are under the influence of drugs or other high adrenaline producing stimulants and animals, which the non-pepper defense sprays are not.
OC Pepper sprays come in stream, cone and fog emissions.
1. The least effective type of pepper spray is the stream because the OC is not released as successfully as the cone or fog mist. But on the plus side, the stream has a range of up to 15 or 20 ft. and is not as likely to get blown back into the user's face. If you can shoot the spray directly into the face and eyes of the attacker, the tiny droplets will do their job and drop him to his knees.
2. The wider spray pattern of the cone pepper spray has the advantage of creating a mist barrier between the user and the assailant or multiple assailants, allowing the user time to get out of the situation. It's finer density than the stream spray assures an instantaneous debilitating effect on the assailant. One disadvantage of the cone spray is that the smaller ones will only shoot to a range of 6 or 8 feet, although the larger 3 or 4 oz. canisters will spray a range of up to 12 to 15 feet. The cone spray is also uncontrollable in a strong breeze and may spray back into the user's face. Therefore, the user must not linger after spraying, but exit the premises as quickly as possible.
3. The fogger pepper spray unit releases a high pressure shot of a fine mist which is the most effective of the three types of sprays because any intake of breath quickly takes the mist to the lung tissue, swelling the mucous membranes and incapacitating the assailant. Even in a wind this mist works well and forms a barrier between the user and the assailant, giving enough time to escape. It works especially well on more than one assailant in still air because the mist will hang for several minutes. The spray range of 15 to 20 feet is also a factor in giving the user time to spray and escape. Unfortunately, the number of shots per unit is less than the stream or cone spray because of the large amount of chemical released with the spray and the high pressure of each unit.
If used correctly, a pepper defense spray can save your life. Although they all have their pros and cons, choose one that you feel comfortable with and play act a real life scenario, getting familiar with the feel of the unit in your hand. Know how it feels when it is aimed away from you so if you ever have to grab it, you won't have to stop and look at which direction the nozzle is pointing. Act out a pretend spray and run, knowing that the pepper spray will do it's job and the important thing is to get out of there as fast as possible without waiting to see what happens to the perpetrator. Then when you are at a safe distance, call the police. Even if you never use your pepper spray, it is an investment in your safety and is better to have and not use than to need and not have.
